The most prevalent symptoms of lung cancer are persistent coughing, worsening of a pre-existing chronic cough and presence of blood in sputum, unexplained loss of weight, chest pains and difficulties in breathing. These symptoms will vary depending on the location of the patient and the rate at which the tumor spreads. The sad reality is that one cannot identify any early signs or warnings of lung cancer easily. Symptoms of lung cancer vary depending on the location and the spreading effect of the tumor but one cannot easily identify early warnings of lung cancer. The best thing one can do is consult a doctor in cases of a new persistent cough or the worsening of an existing chronic cough, if there is blood in his sputum, chest pains and difficulties in breathing and unexplained weight loss Cancer of the lungs can be categorized into primary lung cancer and Mesothelioma. The primary lung cancer is cancer that starts in the lungs while the Mesothelioma or also referred to as secondary lung cancer normally results when the origin of the cancer was from another part of the body spreading to the lungs. The causes of lung cancer can be through smoking, radon gas, asbestos or viruses not forgetting the genetic risk. Smoking: Smoking of cigarettes is the leading cause of lung cancer. In the developed world, cigarette smoking accounts for more than 80% of lung cancer related deaths. People who start smoking at a tender age are at a higher risk of developing lung cancer earlier in life due to the high exposure period. Non-smokers can also develop this type of cancer when they inhale smoke released by smokers found in their midst. All these modes are equally dangerous that is, the active pipe or cigar smoker and the passive smoker. Radon gas: Radon is a naturally occurring gas found in soil. It is said to move from soil, up building foundations, from where inhabitants are then exposed. Exposure to radon gas depends on one’s locality in relation to presence of the gas in underlying rocks and soil in the area. Asbestos: People who have a long contact with asbestos are likely to develop lung cancer especially if they couple it with the smoking of cigarettes. The two combinations are fatal as they increase the chances of developing cancer. Heavy exposure to asbestos lone can also result to lung cancer. Viruses: Viruses have been known to cause lung cancer in animals. However, recent research shows that they do cause lung cancer in humans. Examples of the most common viruses that cause lung cancer are the human papilloma-virus, JC virus and simian virus among others. These viruses will usually change the normal cell cycle, leading to abnormal and uncontrolled cell division. Viruses are difficult to kill and in a short time will develop into lung cancer.
